Canadian Put on 6-Month Waiting List for Emergency Surgery
Smoke TNT
by Smoke TNT  Yesterday 9:58 PM    1
As part of its campaign, the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest has created BigGovHealth.org, a website full of stories from people who have faced health care problems in Europe and Canada. The nonprofit advocates a free-market approach to health care, and its biggest contributors in 2006 were drug maker Pfizer and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America, according to tax filings. Peter Pitts, the center’s president, said that the campaign was meant to counterbalance what he called the mainstream media’s one-sided reporting on the benefits of government-run systems. The media have yet to show him, he said, “one single example of how the system does not work, not one.”

The debate over mammograms for elderly women
Lexica
by Lexica  Yesterday 3:13 PM
"The mammography study, published in May in The Journal of Clinical Oncology, looked at the records of more than 12,000 patients aged 80 and older who were given diagnoses of breast cancer from 1996 to 2002. It found that among those who had a mammogram every year or two before their diagnosis, 68 percent found the cancer at an early stage, compared with 33 percent of those who skipped mammograms altogether. "Five years after the breast cancer diagnosis, 75 percent of the frequent screeners were alive, compared with only 48 percent of those who had not been screened for at least five years before their cancer was found. "But those who had frequent mammograms were not only more likely to survive breast cancer, the study’s authors said, they were more likely to survive other illnesses as well, meaning that they may simply have been healthier to begin with."

Small Fuel Refinery for Ten Grand.
graphictruth
by graphictruth  Yesterday 9:36 AM
Feed stock, used to make the fuel, will cost about $1 per gallon, he said. ... “Henry Ford started the automobile revolution using ethanol, predicting that this renewable and accessible fuel would become the ‘fuel of the future,’ ” he said during the May launch of the Microfueler. “If not for the Prohibition laws in the 1920s and the subsequent rise of the oil industry, ethanol may never have lost its public appeal. E-Fuel will deliver on Ford’s prediction and enable consumers to bypass the costly oil infrastructure and their reliance on fossil fuels.” Butterfield is excited to be working in the field of alternative fuels again. He’s convinced that this time around, the oil market is not going to stabilize and prices will continue to rise. “I thought in 1980 the world was running out of oil. All the signs were there,” he said. “That was true back then, it’s just we were able to stave it off for 25 years. Now we can’t.”

The End of Aging - Still a Controvertial Vision
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-7-2008
Leon Kass and his friends are contemporary incarnations of an Orwellian nightmare. Besides "War is Peace", I hear also "Death is Life". Of course there are no known social good coming from the conquest of death, we never lived in a social system that conquered death. How could we possibly know? But Kass and his friends, seem to have some privileged knowledge we do not possess, and they already decided for us as individuals and as a society. Well, in time, I believe, they will have the choice to walk their talk. All I want is a chance to walk mine.

Why a Semantic Web Will Be Smarter, Faster & All-Around Better
Silkweaver
by Silkweaver  7-7-2008    1
In order to take it to the next level, and move from Web 2.0 to Web 3.0—the information in documents will have to be turned into data that machines can read and evaluate autonomously. Only then will computers be able to take over tasks we now have to do ourselves, such as find the nearest restaurant, book the best flight, or buy the cheapest video game.

How George Washington's Savvy Won The Day
merrie
by merrie  7-3-2008    1
Fighting force. Washington's vision was vindicated in the winter of 1776-77, as his Army, often working with militias, scored quick-hitting successes at Trenton, Princeton, and other parts of New Jersey. Washington even made the best of a painful setback after the British conquest of the nation's capital, Philadelphia. Settling in for a hard winter at Valley Forge, Pa., Washington built a distinctively American fighting force even while exercising political skills that allowed him to overcome insubordinate rivals in the Army and to mollify critics in the Continental Congress. Just as important, he had won the lasting support of America's civilian authorities, to whom he returned all power at war's end. Hearing of that gesture, Britain's King George III said that Washington would be the greatest man in history if it was true.

Silkweaver

The new findings offer an objective tool to assess the often-slippery concept of imagination. This is an interesting and fascinating experiment. It is perhaps a far shot but this may point towards the roots of human's ability and inclination to envision a future reality and than change the world around to fit this reality.

125 Fake Cancer 'Cures' You Should Avoid
Djiezes
by Djiezes  6-30-2008    5
I only clipped the names of the persons/corporations responsible. Watch out for these. See source for the complete list. The products contain ingredients such as bloodroot, shark cartilage, coral calcium, cesium, ellagic acid, Cat's Claw, an herbal tea called Essiac, and mushroom varieties such as Agaricus Blazeii, Shitake, Maitake, and Reishi. These products claim to cure, treat, mitigate or prevent disease, and these products have not been shown to be safe and effective for their labeled conditions of use. Examples of fraudulent claims for these products include: * "Treats all forms of cancer" * "Causes cancer cells to commit suicide!" * "80% more effective than the world's number one cancer drug" * "Skin cancers disappear" * "Target cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone" * "Shrinks malignant tumors" * "Avoid painful surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other conventional treatments"
