POPS12 Weirdest Things Ever Insured Whiskey company Cutty Sark was offering a $1.5 million prize for capturing the mythical Scottish lake inhabitant, the Loch Ness Monster, alive. They then took out home insurance against paying this prize, just in case someone actually did capture it alive. During the 1930s, then 13 year old Harvey Lowe insured his hands for $150,000, which was a large sum of money at the time. Harvey was the Yo-Yo World Champion of that era, having been playing since he was 12. He is still yo-yoing and filling up his current account to this day.

POPSBush urges expanded drilling of Alaskan wildlife New tech allows boring through bull-walrus midsections. Conservatives rage against saying anything funny about not drilling in ANWR, citing apocalyptic destruction of American values. Urge technology tax credits for development of higher petroleum use. "Americans should be able to bathe themselves in light sweet crude."

POPSProtect Bristol Bay, Alaska from Dirty Gold!
5 of the nation's leading jewelry retailers support the protection of Alaska's Bristol Bay from large-scale metals mining. A Canadian mining corporation wants to create one of North America’s largest open pit gold-copper mines, the proposed Pebble Mine, in the headwaters of Bristol Bay: a pit 2.5 miles wide and a toxic lagoon almost 20 square miles. The "No Dirty Gold" campaign lists the "Golden Rules" for responsible mining: basic standards to insure gold is not produced at the expense of communities, the workers, and the environment The hard-rock mining industry is the single largest source of toxic releases in the US and this industry has caused enormous damage to rivers and fisheries around the world. Native villages of Bristol Bay harvest fish and game to support their lifestyle. Bristol Bay is also home to populations of moose, seal, walrus, grizzly, brown, and black bear, beaver, wolverine, bald eagle, caribou, beluga and killer whale, wolves, and more!

POPSLoss of sea ice is harming walrus There is the restriction of walrus to the land when most of the rich feeding grounds, are offshore, where the walrus once used the ice as a platform. The same thing is endangering other species such as polar bears, and seals. The concentration of walrus and other animals on the land and the range that gives them has a detrimental effect in their local feeding, where overfeeding can strip the habitat of an available food source.

POPSA Meaningful and Insightful Story This story from The Walrus Magazine touched me deeply. As someone who lives with permanent disability, and who has a partner who is totally devoted to me and my needs, as I am his, it helped me to understand and deal with some of my own feelings and concerns. This is a must read for anyone involved in a similar situation, or has interest in understanding the effects of permanent disability on a typical family.

This excellent article from Walrus Magazine of Canada, makes very important reading for anyone truly interested in the U.S. arm twisting and manipulations of the Iraqi government to convince them to give up their sovereignty of its own natural resource so the U.S. interests can control it. This is really a MUST READ.

POPS Melting ice pack displaces Alaskan walrus Global warming and its effects on wildlife is rarely discussed, and is happening faster than predictions. There are two solutions for the Alaskan walrus - it is prevention on a global scale or EXTINCTION.
