Millions of salmon vanish from Canadian river
cakebelly
by cakebelly  8-14-2009    1
more (at source): Several theories have been put forward to try to explain the sockeye's disappearance, including that climate change may have reduced food supply for salmon in the ocean, or that they may have been infected with sea lice en route to the Fraser River. Another theory is that the rising temperature of the river may have weakened the fish. The Canadian Government does not know what is killing the fish, but believes the sockeye are dying off in the ocean, not in fresh water, based on healthy out-migrations, said Jeff Grout, regional resource manager of salmon for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

The Seminal Point for the Decline in Media Credibility
willhelm
by willhelm  7-18-2009    2
"after nearly 60,000 U.S. deaths and countless Vietnamese casualties, we bugged out. There’s no way to put an honorable face on that. After the U.S. evacuated, here’s a description of what happened in Ba Chuc. “On April 30, 1977, Pol Pot’s troops launched a surprise attack on 13 villages in eight Vietnamese border provinces. Ba Chuc was the hardest hit. The massacre was at its fiercest during the 12 days of occupation, April 18-30, 1978, during which the intruders killed 3,157 villagers. The survivors fled and took refuge in the pagodas of Tam Buu and Phi Lai or in caves on Mount Tuong, but they were soon discovered. The raiders shot them, slit their throats or beat them to death with sticks. Babies were flung into the air and pierced with bayonets. Women were raped and left to die with stakes planted in their genitals.” Cronkite didn’t cover it. Cronkite was wrong. ...his words became a watershed marking the place where the gradual erosion of the MSM’s credibility.

Agriculture Fingered for E. coli contamination
kahleah
by kahleah  5-11-2009
Wow. To be living so near a water source and find out the local livestock is the main reason the water of Lake Huron and its beaches are contaminated with E. coli. While the study shows how much contamination is contributed from cows, pigs, sheep, and even humans, it is surprising to see this. I guess one doesn't realize how much the fecal bacteria pollutes our water. And this is water that people swim and play in, drink, and use. Granted, most water goes through treatments, however, the thought that the water you're drinking or playing in has fecal matter in it, is pretty darn gross.

Why Print Media Should Subsidize the Kindle
Andy Greenberg

Not a lot of substance/data in this story, but it's a good idea. Right now, it seems that book publishers are selling their Amazon e-books with low margins, but the news media hasn't pitched in to widen the Kindle's userbase.

EPA Arrests CNBC's Rick Santelli
merrie
by merrie  2-26-2009    2
Gibbs added, "I don't know where Mr. Santelli lives, but apparently, like most conservative critics, he has a callous disregard for the lives of the waterfowl, sturgeon and fresh-water mollusks that inhabit the Lake Michigan watershed. If the Chinese were shipping us toys made with derivative securities, we'd recall our ambassador and cut off relations. If R.J. Reynolds were mixing derivative securities with its tobacco, cigarettes would be banned. Do you know what's in those securities, Mr. Santelli?" The press secretary later said that final question was rhetorical since, like the recently-passed stimulus act, "no one really knows what's in there yet." Examiner columnist Scott Ott is editor in chief of ScrappleFace.com, the family-friendly news satire site, and anchor of ScrappleFace Network News (SNN), seen on YouTube.

Repower America
Ilstaat
by Ilstaat  1-17-2009
Anyone who cares about ours and our cildrens futures. It's not enough t osay we care about animals and plants. To say that we want to do something and then expect that our "wishes will become fishes" may make us feel better about ourselves but it's a hollow thought. Now I've never been known as a strong proponent of the United States, but if we can believe that change can occur then I propose to you here and now that this might be one of those watershed moments into a future I could be proud of. If sustainable living and trying to balance our horribly imbalanced human existences has any meaning for you then I emplore you to act in your capacity to promote this ideal in it's most realistic and sustainable way.

Freedom Now Stands Alone
merrie
by merrie  11-8-2008    7
not just in the US but in Britain too – shows the intellectual disarray caused by these profound developments. They say politicians must stop trying to hold the cultural line and go instead with the flow of change. In Britain, the Tory party has adopted this strategy. Now there are Republicans saying the same thing. But John McCain is a Republican who does not fit the old template, who does subscribe to some of this ‘change’ agenda on a number of issues. As a result, he was incapable of attacking Obama on the most important grounds of all: that he stood for values inimical to America’s founding principles. When he did venture into this territory, it was half-cocked and far too late, appearing merely like the desperate throw of a loser. The reason he couldn’t do it earlier was that he had no coherent platform of his own. The Republicans screwed up in government, they selected a hopelessly frail and erratic candidate, he ran a shambolic campaign. They deserved to lose.
