Tax Credits to Hire Vets: A Good Idea or Does it Ignore the Problem?

<p>President Barack Obama is proposing that a couple of tax credits to encourage companies to hire military veterans. About 1 million veterans are part of the 9.1 percent of the people who are unemployed, including 260,000 who enlisted after 9/11. </p> <p> The two tax credits are: </p> <p> * A “Returning Heroes” tax credit of $2,400 for every veteran who is hired. The tax credit is raised to $4,800 if the veteran was unemployed for six months or more. </p> <p> * An extension of the current “Wounded Warriors” tax credit, which provides $4,800 to hire veterans with a service related disabilities. The tax credit is raised to $9.600 if the veteran has been unemployed for six months or more. </p> <p> On the surface the proposal is a no-brainer. Of course people who volunteer to place their bodies between fat, dumb and happy civilians ought to be given every perk to help them adjust to civilian life once their service is completed.
