POPSCelebrate India – Guru Nanak Jayanti with Yatra.com I have been to Harmandir Sahib, more popularly known as the Golden Temple in Amritsar, countless times since childhood and every single time it reveals something new about itself or helps me discover something new about myself. I marvel at its unparalleled beauty but more importantly it’s the soul of the place that really puts my mind at ease. My last visit was during Guru Nanak Jayanti and believe me, there is no better time to visit Golden Temple.

POPSCelebrate India – Puri Beach Festival with Yatra.com India is a land of not thousands but millions of gods and goddesses, and that’s only taking Hinduism into consideration. If all the other religions are taken into the purview then I don’t think there goes by a single day when one or the other religious festival is not being celebrated somewhere or the other in the country. It’s not necessarily a bad thing because this is what lends India its vibrancy and its sense of exotic appeal to especially the foreign tourists. However, excess of anything is bound to become monotonous, sooner or later. This is one of the primary reasons why the idea of modern festivals has become so popular not only in India but throughout the world. Backed by no historical significance but only an intention to promote local culture and tourism, these modern festivals, like the Goa Festival have become a big hit amongst the tourists.

POPS[2:01:19 PM] Aapna Sudip: Celebrate India – Eid-ul-Zuha with Yatra.com Right from Navratri to Diwali to Christmas to Lohri, winters are pretty festive in India. Kids enjoy plenty of extra holidays from school, adults enjoy plenty of festive shopping discounts and for travel enthusiasts like me, not enough can be said about how we feel during this period. We feel like kids who get excited, months in advance about summer vacations and the fun that we would have then. From what I witnessed in Ajmer a few years back on the occasion on Eid-ul-Zuha, I can confidently say that this is how people from the Muslim community throughout the world must feel during this festival, also known more popularly as Bakr-Eid.

POPSCelebrate India – Govardhan Pooja with Yatra.com Every traveller has at least one destination that keeps calling him back over and over again. POPSCelebrate India – Diwali with Yatra.com Travelling is not something I do… for me it just happens. When you spend over 5 months in a year travelling and that too most of the times without your parents’ permission, it is legitimate for them to be annoyed. Yet they choose not to restrain me, for which I am extremely thankful.

POPSCelebrate India – Dusshera with Yatra.com What exactly was the purpose of airing ‘Incredible India!’ tourism campaign on Indian television? This, I never understood. We Indians tend to make a major chunk of our decisions based on word-of-mouth recommendations rather than advertisements.

POPSCelebrate India – Karwa Chauth with Yatra.com Which is the most featured festival in Indian Cinema? Most will definitely say Holi and some might even say Ganesh Chaturthi. That is because a large number of popular songs have been composed for both. But, it takes a little astute observation to realize that it is in fact Karwa Chauth that takes the precedence

POPSCelebrate India – Teej with Yatra.com Having lived in a metropolitan city all my life, I’ve had very limited opportunities to experience the true Indian culture with all its complex rituals and ceremonies. I grew up watching movies like Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath Saath Hain, which display the Indian culture magnificently through the celebration of festivals like Karva Chauth and Teej. Thankfully, Jaipur is one of those few metropolitan cities where Teej is still celebrated with all the pomp and show of years gone by. Since I am not the one who misses opportunities, I grabbed on to an invitation from one of my Rajput friends. After my 12th board exams I conveniently chose to visit him during Teej.

POPSCelebrate India – Hemis Festival with Yatra.com "For a cold and dry desert; Ladakh can be an extremely fascinating place. Small monasteries and the communities surrounding them, tucked away in little pockets amongst the colossal Himalayan Mountains can offer a lot of excitement. Even for a Ladakh regular like me, who thinks he has seen it all. However the annual Hemis festival (this time from 10th to 11th July) which celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Padmasambhava (founder of Tibetan Buddhism) is held in Ladakh’s largest monastery – HemisGompa."

POPSCelebrate India – Guru Purnima with Yatra.com "It was humid, sticky, and the stench of sweat was heavy in the air. And boy was I relieved to get of the crowded bus. But this is bound to happen if you decide to take an overnight, local bus to a religious destination, on the day of Guru Purnima. On days like this the overwhelming crowds can unnerve even for a travel aficionado like me. A suggestion you might want to consider is bringing a pair of shoes for the gooey streets, during rains. But the irony was that I had not taken mine for the fear of having them stolen in such crowds. So I brought two pairs of the cheapest chappals instead, that wouldn’t catch anyone’s eye."

POPSCelebrate India – Janmashtami with Yatra.com In India, Janmashtami is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is known by different names all across the country like Krishnashtami, Saatam Aatham, Gokulashtami, Ashtami Rohini, Srikrishna Jayanti, Sree Jayanthi The temples witness an extravagant and colourful celebration on this occasion. Raaslila is performed to recreate incidents from the life of Krishna and to commemorate his love for Radha. The idol of the infant Krishna is bathed at midnight and is placed in a cradle. Devotional songs and dances mark the celebration of this festive occasion all over Northern India.

POPSCelebrate India – Joy’s Amarnath Yatra Jab Jab Bhole Shankar ka Bulava aata hai, tab tab bhakt darshan ko jaata hai” meaning that whenever the Lord calls, the devotee goes to his abode. However this becomes increasingly difficult to believe when you have been stuck in the same tent for two days straight. While it has been snowing in the mountains non-stop and chances of your Amarnath Yatra are becoming bleaker by the hour. Your only solace lies in the UNO cards you were smart enough to bring along, the free food in the lungars and a group of people to keep you company.

POPSCelebrate India – Pulling the juggernaut on Rath Yatra India is a huge country, not only because of its sheer size but more so because of its diversity. It is difficult to travel a few hundred miles without you starting to notice a stark contrast in the changing landscape, the spoken language, the religious diversity, the attire of the people, the food they eat, etc. And after traveling a few lakh miles, if you start to think you have seen it all, you my friend, cannot be any further from the truth. And I say this not only from faith but experience too.
